3 DIY Recipes to Lighten Hair Naturally

March 29, 2016

Most of us long for lighter locks, but are simply too scared to apply bleach to our hair as it can be quite drying and if not done correctly it can certainly damage your hair.

That’s why we want to share some DIY natural lightening recipes you can do right in the comfort of your own home. These recipes will gently lighten your hair, without the harsh effects of bleach. Note that the results are very subtle, but your hair will certainly look lighter, especially when out in the sun!

1. The Chamomile Rinse

Chamomile tea is renowned for it’s calming properties and after just one cup of this floral tea, you are sure to feel very relaxed. Did you know, however, that chamomile tea can also lighten your hair? The light color of this tea, as well as the natural chemicals in chamomile flowers, helps to bring out natural highlights in your hair.

There are many ways to use chamomile to lighten hair, but our favourite way is a chamomile rinse. Simply brew a cup of chamomile tea and allow it to cool. After shampooing and conditioning hair, simply rinse hair for a final time by pouring the cooled tea over your hair. Don’t rinse it out, simply dry your hair and let it air dry or style as usual. Your hair will look brighter and it will also feel incredibly soft!

2. Lemon and Coconut Oil Spray

Lemon is an ageold remedy when it comes to lightening hair and it really works! It can be very drying, though, so we recommend adding some coconut oil to help condition your hair while you lighten.

Simply fill a small spray bottle with one cup of warm water, the juice of one lemon and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Shake it up and spray on your hair before heading outdoors. It’s best to expose your locks to the sun when you do this treatment as the sun has a natural bleaching effect on hair and it helps to activate the lightening effects of the lemon. Be sure to follow up with a good hair treatment.

3. Honey Treatment

Honey has a small amount of natural hydrogen peroxide present in it, which is known to lighten hair. It’s also very nourishing for the hair as it provides deep moisture. That’s why honey works perfectly as an intensive hair treatment while helping to lighten hair at the same time.

Simply mix together 1 tablespoon honey to 1⁄4 cup olive oil and apply to hair until it is fully saturated. Wrap your hair up in a warm towel or a shower cap and let penetrate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Rinse out and shampoo and condition as usual.

Try these treatments next time you feel like a subtle change as well as when your hair needs a little TLC!
